How Efficient is your Building?

45 && charCode < 58) || charCode == 8) return true; return false; } var BTUs = 12 * (document.hhi.bill.value - serviceCharge) / ratePerBTU //alert('Your building used ' + BTUs + ' BTUs of energy from this utility in the past year.') var HHI = Math.round(BTUs / HDDs / document.hhi.area.value) document.hhi.HHI.value = HHI if (HHI < 8) { document.hhi.recommendation.value = "Congratulations! Your building is already above average in efficiency. Please contact us if you have any questions about further improvements -- or solar power!" } else if (HHI < 13) { document.hhi.recommendation.value = "Your building is within the average range in efficiency. We can help you make it even better! Please contact us for efficiency consulting." } else { document.hhi.recommendation.value = "Your building is below average in efficiency. An energy audit will pay for itself, and you may qualify for a low-interest loan to help pay for your improvements." } } -->

This form will estimate your home or workplace's Home Heating Index (explained below). It assumes that your building is near Emporia, Kansas. If you are located elsewhere, please read below about how to calculate your HHI manually.

This form is anonymous. If you'd like us to calculate your HHI for you, please Contact Us with your street address.

Your building's heated area: square feet.
Don't know it? Look it up or call the Lyon County Appraiser's office at (620) 341-3302.

What utility provides your heat? Kansas Gas Service, (800) 794-4780Westar Energy (electric), (800) 383-1183

Your average monthly bill for this utility over the past 12 months: $.

How it Works

Just knowing how much energy a building consumes doesn't tell us much unless we also know how big it is and how cold the climate is where it's located. For this reason, the Home Heating Index (HHI) is defined as BTUs of energy, divided by square feet of area, divided by heating degree days.

  • An HHI of 13 or more indicates that the building is very inefficient. An energy audit would pay for itself and for any improvements!
  • An average building has an HHI between 8 and 13. If your HHI is in the average range, you've still got room for improvement, so contact us for efficiency consulting!
  • An HHI lower than 8 indicates that the building is very efficient and is ready for solar panels!

If you live in an area other than Emporia, Kansas, you can find the heating degree days for the past 12 months in your location at Wolfram Alpha. You will also need to look at your heating bills from the past year and add up your energy consumption in MCF of gas or kWh of electricity, then convert that number into BTUs. Multiply MCF by 1,020,000 or kWh by 3,412.3 to get the number of BTUs you consumed. Divide the BTUs by the square footage of your building, and then divide that by the heating degree days, and you'll have your HHI.

Now, technically what we're calculating here is not just heating, because you probably do other things with your gas and electricity besides heat your building. But regardless of what you do with your energy, The Green Door can help you do it more efficiently! This HHI calculator just gives you a rough idea of how we can best help you.

If your home was built after 1925, Kansas Gas Service has a Home Energy Efficiency Calculator you may also want to try.
